Plowman's Lunch

I'm fascinated with all things British, and their traditional lunches are no exception. Stemming from the farmers taking a sack lunch out into the fields, the plowman's lunch is the ultimate in clean eating.

Usually consisting of a protein (a ham slice or egg), a loaf of crusty homemade bread, butter, cheese, pickle, and apple, the lunch is hearty for someone doing physical labor while also providing a nice mix of food groups. Add in a spicy mustard...heaven!

Most pubs in England and Ireland offer some version of this meal, and I did my own here. I included an egg, soft Swiss cheese, fruit cocktail, wheat thins, Fuji apple, pickle, and almonds. I love doing variations of this, and it's a great way to clean out the fridge!

Since it doesn't require heating or long-term refrigeration, it's a great meal to take as a school or work lunch.

Have you had a real Plowman's lunch before? Why not give it a try as a small break in the day and a simple luxury?
